Drawing for Designers

Technical Package Pantech Pursuit II

  • Sketches of a slider phone sliding open with a closed phone hovering above
  • 5 overlapping sketches of the shape of a sliding phone to show it from different angles
  • Exploded view sketch of a phone from the right side expanded to show each component below where it would be placed

The drawings above make up a technical package for an existing product, the Pantech Pursuit II, created as my final project for the Drawing for Designers course at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. All drawings shown are ballpoint pen on 8.5×11 paper. Below are brainstorming sketches for possible storyboards for the product’s use to call for help, one based on being stuck in a snow storm and the other on getting a flat tire, one of which could later be fleshed out and incorporated into the tech pack.

  • 5 roughly sketched scenes making up a storyboard of a person standing outside in the snow
  • 4 roughly sketched scenes making up a storyboard of a car with flat tie, using a phone to call for help, and waving as help arrives

Learning and Practice

I took Drawing for Designers to learn about the details of industrial design sketching and build my skills to quickly communicate product ideas. Throughout the experience, I practiced drawing and writing in pen, learned tips for maintaining proportions and sketching small-scale items, built my intuition for perspective, and explored shifting from a controlled and architectural style to something quicker and more fluid. Below are a selection of earlier works from the course in reverse chronological order as I practiced applying line weight, breaking down forms, creating vignettes, and adding shadows.

  • 2 Drawings of a rounded over flashlight with a power button in the middle of the handle. Drawings have shadows under them and slightly overlap with a triangular background vignette. Front, side, and top view sketches on bottom left corner
  • 2 Drawings of a cylindrical flashlight with notched grip and knurled base. Drawings have contour lines to show notches and slightly overlap with a triangular background vignette. Front, side, and top view sketches on bottom left corner
  • 2 Drawings of a tubular flashlight with many rectangular grips on the handle. Drawings have slightly overlap with a rounded rectangle background vignette. Front, and top view sketches on bottom left corner
  • 2 Drawings of a table with a rectangular top and edges that curve inward to form a smaller rectangular base. Drawings slightly overlap with background vignette with the profile of the table. Front, side, and top view sketches on bottom left corner
  • 2 Drawings of table made up of 3 clear 'shard's pointing away from each other at an angle and poking through a clear round tabletop. Drawings overlap a triangular background vignette pointing to the bottom right of the page. Front, side, and top view sketches on bottom left corner
  • 2 Drawings of a cylindrical table with 4 points holding up a clear top. Drawings slightly overlap with a round background vignette. Front, side, and top view sketches on bottom left corner
  • Perspective drawing of a boxy upholstered chair with rounded over edges and visible sketch lines. Front, side, and top view sketches in bottom left corner.
  • Perspective drawing of a boxy sofa with hard edges and visible sketch lines. Front, side, and top view sketches in bottom left corner.
  • Perspective drawing of a sofa with rounded over edges, curved backrest, and visible sketch lines. Front, side, and top view sketches in bottom left corner.
  • 10 front view thumbnail sketches brainstorming sofa/chair designs
  • 6 sketches of complex 3d shapes on a white background
